Grand Valley Falls at Wildcat Invite

OCT 21 & 22, 2006

The Lakers traveled to Northwestern this weekend to battle in the Wildcat Invitational.  They would match up in their pool play with Wisconsin and Illinois.  GVSU defeated Wisconsin 17-11 and Illinois 18-5, setting up matchups with Miami(OH) and Michigan State.  The Lakers defeated Miami 16-5 and looked forward to a game against MSU for first place on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans and Lakers played solid defense throughout the first quarter.  The only goal came near the end of the quarter when Chris Posthumus got a counterattack and scored with less than a minute left in the period.  In the second the defense let up a bit.  GVSU got the next goal on a five-meter penalty converted by Matt Leskovar, but the Spartans would score the next two.  At the half the score was 4-3 in favor of Grand Valley.  Each team netted 2 goals in the third and going into the fourth the Lakers lead was 6-5.  In the end turnovers and poor shooting haunted the Lakers, as they were shutout in the 4th and lost the game 7-6 to the Spartans.  Both teams played great defense and the Spartans came up with a timely score  in the final 16 seconds and the Lakers could not answer back.
